Ilkley Moor is a swampy area near the small English town of Ilkley (details about Ilkley are in my story here).
Ilkley Moor got famous due to the stones of unusual shape and petroglyphs that were found here by the explorers.
The shortest way to Ilkley is from Leeds by train or by bus X8 (daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.) or from Harrogate by bus X52 (daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Sunday).
Bus tickets are available in the bus and you can get a train ticket online at www.GoEuro.com
It is just a 20 minute walk to Ilkley Moor from Ilkley train station.
What to see in Ilkley Moor?
If you are traveling by car you can use free parking place beside “Cow and Calf Roch Café”. It is also a wonderful place for a snack and a coffee after your walk.
One of the key attractions of Ilkley is the rock “Cow and Calf”. In fact, it is a sandstone rock of original shape. To be more precise, there are two rocks right beside each other.
Also, there is a petroglyph of Swastika discovered in this location. This ancient sign was carved very thoroughly four thousand years ago. Let me remind you, that, long before it was used by Hitler, for thousands years already Swastika icon has been a symbol of the harmonic rotational movement of the Universe. By the way, this sign in Ilkley is one of the oldest stone carvings of Swastika found in the world.
And this is not it. There is also a stone circle called “The Twelve Apostles” that acquired its name due to its shape and position. The scientists think that it is the remains of a pyramid (7x8) that used to be a special burial monument of some noble person at that time. The rest of the grave stones have been taken away by local people for building purposes.
It is also in Ilkley where they discovered the mysterious Cups & Ring rock. This name is given due to the carving on its surface. Most probably, it was just a guess of the explorers, as nobody knows exactly what it means. There are still disputes among the scientists regarding the meaning and the answer is still to be found, if ever.
In any case, Ilkley Moor is a very interesting and mysterious place. And even if you are not planning to be searching the stones for all the carvings and symbols, it is still worth having a one day walk around there to enjoy the incredibly beautiful natural views of Yorkshire.
If you still have time left after the visit to Ikley Moor, you can also see the Bolton Abbey (the details are in my story here).
