Where to make a wish in Prague

Of course, on Charles Bridge!

This stone arch bridge is the iconic spot of the city, and even if you have not visited Prague yet, you must have seen it on the post cards - it is really amazing! It was originally called Prague Bridge till 1870.

The legend tells that Karl IV selected the date of its foundation based on the astrologists’ recommendation to make sure it endures the eternity of times. The official opening ceremony of the construction took place in 1357 year, on 9th of July at 5:31 a.m. You may have noticed the magic of the number 135795531.

There is a strong belief that this bride is a magic bridge that may help one to reach the desired destination. The poor will become rich and the sick will recover after they cross the bridge.

There are 30 statues along the bridge on both sides and three of them are special. They are easily identified by the crowd of tourists in front of them and the gloss that they have due to so much attention.

Statue of St. John of Nepomuk. Make your wish!

People usually make the first wish near the monument of St. John of Nepomuk, one of the most respectable Czech saints and the protector of the city.

There are three bas-relief elements at the bottom of the monument: a dog, a woman and the body of the saint. The dog stands for the friends who turned away from the priest, the woman stands for the Queen who did not protect the holly man. You have to rub the bas-relief figure of the saint to make your wish come true.

And after that, you have to find the place on the bridge from where the holly man was thrown into the river.

The bronze figure of St. John Nepomuk.  How to make a wish properly.

The second wish is usually made here. There is a special ritual of making a wish at the statue of St. John Nepomuk.

You should touch the five stars with your right hand, put your left hand on the saint’s feet and step with your right foot on the shining nail in the paving stone. This is the right position in which you can make your wish.

Some say, that you should touch the cross with your right hand and rub tow times the figure of the saint and the stars over his head with your left hand while standing with your right foot on the nail.

Anyways, I guess it is just a legend and it is really enough to touch the saint’s figure. What is more important is that this statue can fulfill the wishes for love, health and good friends, but not a material wish.

The third place is the entrance to Charles Bridge

The third wish is made at the entrance to Charles Bridge. In the four corners decorated with the statues there are four hidden figures kingfishers. Whoever finds the fifth kingfisher can make a wish!
