What to see in Vienna
Since I had only one day to visit Vienna, I started my acquaintance with the city at the Stephansplatz metro station. This place can be a starting point of your 3-4 hours walk around the old town, as it is not possible to imagine the visit to Vienna without seeing its historical part.
Coming out of the metro, you will not be able to miss the stunning beauty of the medieval church, St. Stephen Cathedral. Here, on the Stephansplatz, you can have a ride in a carriage drawn by a pair of horses. These are Viennese fiacres, and, like Venetian gondolas, they are kind of symbol of the city.
I took a fiacre at the Cathedral and made a small circle up to the Anker Clock on Hoher Markt, 10-11. To see the clock, it is better to look up, otherwise, you might pass it by. They are quite small, unlike the astronomical clock in Prague, and I was not impressed too much. But as it is located only two blocks from the Cathedral, you might take a look, still. The clock symbolizes the fleetingness of time. The figure of a child with a butterfly represents life and the sand scales represent death. Every day at 12.00, you can watch how these figures move, reminding of the history of Austria.
If you go along the street from the Church of St. Peter you will get to the Michaelerplatz (St. Michael's Square), where the luxurious Hofburg Palace stands out boldly on the background of the rest buildings of Vienna. In winter it is open from 9 a.m.to 5:30 p.m. and up to 6 p.m. in summer. Remember, that they stop selling tickets an hour before the close of the museum. Entrance fee is € 15.
The territory of Hofburg Palace includes picturesque Volksgarten, Heldenplatz and Burggarten Park with the monument of Mozart. And across the street, there is a museum quarter formed by the Museum of Natural History and Art History, the Leopold Museum and Modern Art, and even Museumsplatz street.
And, at least from the outside, it is also worth seeing Vienna City Hall, the venue of frequent balls and fairs. The building of Vienna Parliament is also nearby. The Parliament building is under reconstruction until 2021 and is closed for the public.
If you wish to have a delicious dessert with coffee or a glass of wine, I recommend to you Café Central on Herrengasse 14. It is worth visiting it, at least from historical standpoint — this cafe was opened in 1876. There's always a queue, but it is moving very fast. This is a very special restaurant with live music in one of the most beautiful palaces in Vienna.
Seeing more of Vienna
It is really worth visiting Vienna Opera. It can fascinate even those who are far from the world of opera and ballet. The ticket office is open on working days from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. and up to 12. Ticket prices are highly dependent on the performance.
If you want to have a nice walk, go to the City Park. It is a bit aside the main route around the city center, but it might interest you with the monuments of famous personalities: Mozart, Strauss, Schubert and others.
The fountains with beautiful lighting are turned on in the evening and, from time to time, there are free concerts held in the park.
Schoenbrunn is one more legacy of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire. Although it is not located in the historical center of Vienna, it is definitely worth a visit! This palace is an accumulation of a huge number of stunning pieces of art. A visit here for adults will cost € 15. The museum opens at 8:30 a.m. and the closing time depends on the time of the year and can range from 16:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in summer.
Unusual sights of Vienna
A bright and slightly weird site of the city is the Hundertwasser House that would attract attention of anyone. In terms of its style, it is somehow similar to the works of Gaudi, but much more colorful.
And if you want to see some more original architecture of Vienna, then do not pass by the Strudlhofstige stairs. It is built in the Art Nouveau style and you can take great pictures here!
From 10 a.m. to 15:45 p.m., you can visit the Butterfly House. This is a very interesting place with an incredible collection of amazingly beautiful creatures. A ticket for an adult is € 6.5.
